Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack - M.E. Kerr

Tucker finds a stray cat, Nader, that he takes in. His dad develops a sudden allergy to cats when he loses his job. Dinky Hocker, a girl who gorges herself and eventually the cat, takes Nader in. Tucker visits Nader and meets Dinky’s cousin, Natalia, whom he gets a crush on. Mrs. Hocker does not approve of any of this. Moreover, she would rather pay attention to the drug addicts that she attempts to treat rather than her daughter Dinky and her problems and her friends, who are really quite better for her than her mother is. Now Dinky must take it upon herself to do something more drastic than the drug addicts to gain her mother’s attention and care. How can Tucker help his dad, Dinky, his now-overweight-cat, and his ‘girlfriend’ Natalia? The dialogue in this book is sincere and revealing more so than any descriptive writing can be. My favorite part was the Christmas dinner at the Hocker’s house (read to find out why!). The cat’s situation brings all of these diverse people together and, watching their personalities mix, the most fascinating relationships bloom.

On the dark side, I thought the third person made me feel too far away from the characters. Also, although the characters changed in dynamic ways and were supposed to give the reader some kind of huge and satisfying revelation, I feel like the ending was rather uneventful (even when so many ‘big’ things happened). It was lacking something, but I’m not quite sure what. I did like that every single character changed in some way, though.
