Glass By Ellen Hopkis and a sequel to Crank . Page 460 Sharing the whole page since it isn’t that long

In the White Shadow of Morning

He reaches for

Me. Rains down

On me, showers

Me with ecstasy.

My tears fall

Upon the pillow,

Fall upon his skin .

It drinks them in

Don’t cry, he

Sooths . You know

I love you, will

Never hurt you .

But hurt pounds

Against me now,

A hammer of pain

Beating my heart

I craw into his

Arms , lay my head against the shoulder

A fearful child .

“ I know you have

to go. But  I don’t

know how to let

you. So just go.”

This is typed exactly how it is in the book. With a lot of poems spacing is very important. It makes me wonder whom Kristina AKA Bree is speaking to. It would seem the spacing is there to empty putting herself at a distance from this other person who I am assuming is guy and perhaps a boyfriend. She’s afraid that he will hurt her or her dangerous habits will bring him down into the horror of her world. Since  I am only a couple of pages into this going to take awhile to figure the context of this conversation.

Crank

Reading level: Young Adult

Paperback: 544 pages

Publisher: McElderry (October 5, 2004)

Language: English

ISBN-10: 0689865198

ISBN-13: 978-0689865190

Cover Art: A. Now this one is hard to rate. While the cover is very plain with only the title and author name , believe that is the way it should be. The story is not pretty and the cover is trying to show that. The world Hopkins creates is ugly and lays bare the truth of what it feels like to struggle with a drug addiction.

Characters : A+ All well developed, interesting to read about. Strong narrator

Plot : A+ Lots of twist and turns. One of those books you can and will not want to put down

Writing : A+ The style is such an interesting way to tell a story. Even though it makes the book a little long , the story itself is so worth it.

Today is also a review day since I finished the  book that came before this one called Crank. In short Crank , another word for meth, is the story written verse about a sixteen year old girl named Kristina. Overall Kristina seems like you average girl. She makes good grades , loves her family even though it is far from normal, what with a lesbian sister, and divorced parents, and overall she is the typical teenager. Then she goes to visit her dad. As soon as she gets there she meets a boy named Adam , falls for him and discovers the “Monster” crank. Long are innocent days of doing well and being the overly good daughter. Now Bree comes out to play. Kristina becomes a wild, dangerous, over sexual teen girl who worries only about when she can get high again. Through her crazy downward spiral with the drug, she discovers friends, relationships and a few quite unexpected surprises.

Now while Crank is referring to a the drug that Kristina uses and what she calls the Monster, think her thinking can refer to a lot of addictions and how they start off with one little hit and then turn into crazy climb to have more and more. While the book is told in verse from Kristina’s point of view, all the characters are very fleshed out and feel like anyone the reader could know or could of read about. The novel does an excellent job of showing the dangers of this risky behavior without preaching that the behavior is wrong.. Believe that it could be used as a add for teens or really anyone who might consider doing drugs. All seem to thing that the first time won’t be bad or they can stop before it gets out of control, sadly that just isn’t the case. Kristina’s struggles, highs, and lows show the reality of a girl so hooked on an illegal substance she begins to become someone she doesn’t know anymore. Be prepared to be blown away by the real, dirty, and gripping journey through the eyes of a girl struggling to say a float as she battles her own demons and tries to fight the Monster that has taken over her life.
